1. Introduction and Background

In line with our expansion and commitment to best practices in livestock management, Arlaadi Agribusiness Solutions is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Skilled Labourer specializing in Sheep and Goat Farming. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of our Baidoa farm, ensuring the health, welfare, and productivity of our sheep and goat herds.

2. Job Summary

The Skilled Labourer, Sheep and Goat Farming, will be responsible for the daily care, feeding, health management, and general husbandry of sheep and goats on the Arlaadi Agribusiness Solutions farm in Baidoa. This role requires practical experience in livestock management, a strong understanding of animal welfare, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team to achieve production targets and maintain farm standards.

3. Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Skilled Labourer will include, but are not limited to, the following:

3.1. Animal Husbandry and Welfare:

  • Feeding and Watering: Ensure consistent provision of appropriate feed (fodder, concentrates, supplements) and clean water to all sheep and goats according to their age, physiological state (e.g., pregnant, lactating, growing), and production cycle.
  • Grazing Management: If applicable, manage rotational grazing systems to optimize pasture utilization and prevent overgrazing.
  • Health Monitoring: Daily observation of animals for signs of illness, injury, or distress; promptly report any anomalies to the Farm Manager/Livestock Supervisor.
  • Disease Prevention: Assist in implementing routine vaccination schedules, deworming programs, and other preventative health measures as advised by the veterinarian or supervisor.
  • Treatment Administration: Administer prescribed medications and treatments to sick or injured animals under the direct supervision of the Farm Manager or a qualified veterinarian.
  • Hoof Care: Conduct regular hoof trimming and inspection to prevent lameness.
  • Shearing/Clipping: Perform shearing of sheep and clipping of goats as per seasonal requirements or specific needs.
  • Handling and Restraint: Safely and humanely handle and restrain animals for routine procedures, examinations, or treatments.

3.2. Breeding and Reproduction (as required):

  • Assist in breeding programs, including heat detection, mating, and record-keeping of breeding activities.
  • Provide care for pregnant ewes and does, including monitoring for signs of impending parturition.
  • Assist during lambing and kidding, ensuring the well-being of newborns and mothers.
  • Provide immediate post-natal care for lambs and kids, including colostrum intake, navel disinfection, and bonding with mothers.

3.3. Farm Operations and Maintenance:

  • Housing Management: Maintain clean, dry, and well-ventilated housing facilities (pens, sheds, kraals) for all animals. Regularly clean and disinfect animal shelters and feeding areas.
  • Infrastructure Maintenance: Conduct minor repairs and maintenance of farm infrastructure, including fences, gates, water troughs, feed bunks, and shelters.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate and maintain basic farm equipment and tools used in livestock management (e.g., wheelbarrows, shovels, cleaning tools).
  • Waste Management: Implement proper disposal of animal waste and farm refuse to maintain hygiene and environmental standards.

3.4. Record Keeping and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate daily records of feed consumption, water intake, animal health observations, treatments administered, births, deaths, and movements.
  • Assist the Farm Manager/Livestock Supervisor in compiling weekly or monthly reports on herd performance and farm activities.

3.5. Biosecurity and Safety:

  • Adhere strictly to farm biosecurity protocols to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases.
  • Follow all health and safety guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for oneself and colleagues.
  • Properly store and handle all farm chemicals, medications, and equipment.

3.6. General Duties:

  • Assist in loading and unloading livestock for transport or market.
  • Participate in farm inventory counts of feed, supplies, and animals.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Farm Manager/Livestock Supervisor.

4. Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Completion of primary education is required. Formal training or certification in animal husbandry, veterinary assistance, or a related agricultural field from a recognized institution is highly desirable.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of practical, hands-on experience in sheep and goat farming, preferably in a commercial or semi-commercial setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in animal handling, feeding, health monitoring, and basic treatment administration.
  • Experience with lambing/kidding assistance is a significant advantage

Skills:

  • Strong practical skills in livestock management, including safe animal handling and restraint techniques.
  • Basic understanding of common sheep and goat diseases, their symptoms, and preventative measures.
  • Ability to accurately record data and maintain simple farm records.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently when required.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Language: Fluency in Somali (oral and written) is essential. Basic understanding of English is an added advantage.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, standing for long periods, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
