Organization background
Wadajir Rural Development Organization (WARDO), WARDO is a civil society organization, WARDO has been working since 2005 in Somalia, it was established by group of Somali humanitarian and development workers who were dedicated and committed to social developments through education and youth development, agriculture and livelihoods, protection, emergency response and water and sanitation programs. WADAJIR Rural Development Organization (WARDO) is a registered and operational Non-Governmental Organization in South and Central Somalia, WARDO was registered in 2005 by the Federal Government of Somalia. The organization has its main office in Mogadishu and Baidoa, with regional offices in the other 4 FMS of South and Central Somalia (Jubaland, Galmudug, Southwest, and Hir-Shabelle).
Context of the project
The heavy rains and floods linked to the El Nino weather phenomena have killed dozens of people and caused widespread displacement, destruction of infrastructures and other public assets shared by the community, particularly in Somalia, where the rains have wrecked bridges and submerged residential areas.
According to SoDMA and humanitarian partners more than 1.7 million people are in need as torrential rains destroyed their homes, destructing existing WASH infrastructures and livelihoods in Somalia. The number of people displaced by heavy rains and floods in Somalia has nearly doubled in one week from 334,800 to 649,000.
The heavy rains fell in south-West State of Somalia have resulted in flash floods across Baidoa district. As of 6th November 2023, at least 247K people in 384 informal settlements in Baidoa were affected by El-Nino flash floods. The number of affected sites has increased from 164 to 384 sites in the last two weeks while the affected population has doubled. Approximately 1,077 communal latrines in Baidoa were damaged by recent flash floods. Exposed sewage has contaminated water sources increasing the risks of AWD/Cholera outbreak. In Bardale town over 95K IDP population are affected by flash floods of which 1,264 people have moved to higher grounds.
Purpose of the Position
The Water Quality Supervisor is responsible to supervise routinely water quality and treatment activities against the set work plans and supports and guides the water monitors. He/she is also responsible for the management and overseeing the monitoring, assessment, and maintenance of water quality standards for WARDO’s current WASH project implemented in Baidoa. This project is targeting the most vulnerable IDPs in Baidoa. The role involves supervising a team of water quality technicians, conducting regular inspections, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
Job description
- Supervise the work of environmental services specialist, environmental services coordinator, environmental services technician, and environmental services aide staff in the Water Quality section including planning, organizing, directing, and controlling their assignments, goals, objectives, and personal development.
- Leads a team of water quality operators to chlorinate all the water points with the required amount of chlorine to attain the required by the program at water source.
- Review, and evaluate proposed water quality regulations at state and national level and prepare reports to the WASH field officer.
- Develop, maintain, and coordinate the water quality monitoring programs.
- Attending coordination meetings related to water quality as at state and national level and other government and actors led initiatives.
- Perform set duties including budgeting, monitoring, corrections, and implementation within the scope of the project.
- Report to the WASH field officer about field-based observations and analyses.
- Train water quality WG if possible and WARDO WASH team on water quality control operations and procedures.
Supervision and team management
- Lead, train, and supervise the WASH project field working team for water quality technics or analyzes.
- Provide guidance and support to ensure the team’s effective performance in water quality monitoring and testing.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in public health, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in Hygiene Promotion awareness creation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic data analyses knowledge for reporting
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to working in difficult and remote locations.
